"DOCTORS and nurses in Bahrain are being trained to handle violent patients or relatives, following a spate of attacks. They are also being urged to take up martial arts, to defend themselves. Extra security staff are also being drafted in at the Salmaniya Medical Complex Accident and Emergency department. Medical and security staff at the SMC and the Psychiatric Hospital are being given a course in dealing with violent behaviour. Psychiatric Hospital chairman Dr Adel Al Ofi will lead the workshops, the first of which is planned for Monday. It follows an increase in incidents of patients and/or their relatives attacking doctors, nurses and security staff, in particular at the SMC. The incidents, reported in the GDN, have even prompted a local martial arts expert to give tips and free self-defence manuals to staff. "This is increasingly a concern to medical professionals," said Dr Al Ofi."
